Full disclosure: I’m not a fan of Ghostbusters. Sure, if I need a laugh, and it’s on, I’ll watch it for a few minutes. It really just never got to me, unlike most kids that grew up in the 1980s. Don’t get me wrong, I like Harold Ramis’ writing, and Bill Murray is pure comedy gold.
Full disclosure 2: I HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE reboots. To me, when you reboot something, or remake something, you’re just lazy. Again, that’s my opinion on ALL reboots/remakes. My god, how many times do we have to reboot “Spiderman,” before we just finally say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH?!
With both being said, yes, my first reaction to a Ghostbusters “reboot” (this isn’t a remake) was the usual groan of “oh god, here we go again.” To an extent, it still is. Yet, I’ve kept my mouth shut about it for a long time.
Why? Because I have no plans on seeing it (at least in the theater), and I don’t want to pee all over the people who do want to see it. I would NEVER do that to anyone, unless they’re going to see a snuff film. (Then, I feel it’s my duty to warn them, but the friends I have that want to see those are man and woman enough to handle it.)
So, why am I writing this? Because I have sat back and watched the big Ghostbusters debate to the point I’m just annoyed to get on social media. So, here goes.
Both sides have gone too far. To the anti-Ghostbusters side. Yeah, we get it. You don’t want to see it, for whatever reason. You might have an affinity for the 1980s move, you might not like Paul Feig movies (*raises hand*). Yet, your wrong for the right reasons.
However, if you have a bee in your bonnet because it’s an all female cast, you’re a fucking moron.
However, to the pro-Ghostbusters side. SHUT UP. There are people out there that do not want to see the movie, that have reasons that doesn’t involve the gender of the cast. That is okay. Look, not everyone is sexist, not everyone had bad intent. However, you are right for the wrong reasons.
The truth of the matter is, what the Angry Video Game Nerd said is right. “If you are already going to hate the movie, why give them your money?” Bingo. Well said. He also highlighted one of the problems I have with it, and it has NOTHING to do with this film.
Many fans of the original movie are pretty pissed off that they were teased for OVER A DECADE about a reunion or a third movie, but there were people that didn’t want it made. Ok, that’s understandable. I can see their argument that it spits in their face.
What I don’t like about this is the Tumblrinas (yes, that’s my nickname for the third-wave feminists) have come down from the mountaintop and decreed:
“ANY ONE WHO HATES THIS MOVIE IS AUTOMATICALLY A RAPIST, AND HATES WOMEN, AND SHOULD DIE”
Look, I get it, you want an mostly female cast to be a mainstream hit. Frankly, I hope it does. I hope it turns on new generations to Ghostbusters. I hope that fandom explodes. I want Black Panther to be a HUGE hit. I’ll even let you know right now, I am excited to see Harley Quinn get a female Suicide Squad. I plan to watch it. But, don’t do that. Don’t scream sexism, where there isn’t any.
Yes, I saved the main reason why I won’t see Ghostbusters in the theaters. It’s the same reason I will NEVER step foot in a theater again. They allow texting. That has me more angry than this debate, than the transgender bathroom debate, or anything that doesn’t involve life or death matters.
Thank you, AMC Theaters for ruining my love of going to the movies. Batman vs. Superman will be the last theater movie I ever see. Screw you for even THINKING that was a good idea.
